Facility to create driver jobs

Friday, December 9th, 2016

The creation of a new UPS facility will create more driver jobs.

United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS), a package delivery company, will create 1,250 jobs and invest more than $400 million to establish a regional sorting and distribution hub in Atlanta by the end of 2018.

“I am very pleased to see that UPS, a Fortune 500 company and mainstay in Atlanta for many years, will plant deeper roots in our city with this new hub of operations,” said Mayor Reed. “This investment in southwest Atlanta will not only create 1,250 new jobs, but strengthen our position as an international hub for logistics supported by the world’s busiest passenger airport and the many global companies who call Atlanta home.”

UPS will create supervision, administrative and warehouse positions for the new sorting and distribution hub.

“Georgia demonstrates an enduring commitment to industry leaders and job creators. With this investment, UPS will use Georgia’s location, transportation infrastructure and logistics sector to reach customers more quickly and more efficiently. UPS is already making a substantial economic impact in the Atlanta area and we look forward to the company’s continued success,” said Governor Deal.

“We are excited that UPS has decided to expand its operations in the City of Atlanta with this major distribution center,” said Invest Atlanta President and CEO Dr. Eloisa Klementich. “This new facility represents a significant economic investment in the southside of Atlanta that will provide residents access to new jobs across a spectrum of skill levels. Invest Atlanta looks forward to working with the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency and UPS to build a pipeline of qualified professionals for these positions.”

“I am pleased that our county leaders had the foresight to realize the value of this land and work closely with UPS to make this exciting project happen,” said John Eaves, chairman of the Fulton County Commission. “The benefits it will bring in terms of jobs and investment are immeasurable. This is a huge shot in the arm and yet another example of the economic engine that Fulton County has become.”

The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) Director of Existing Industry and Regional Recruitment Lindsay Martin represented the Global Commerce division throughout this project in partnership with Invest Atlanta and Fulton County.

UPS and the city as busy creating more driver jobs in Chicago for the holiday season.

UPS is planning to hire more than 3,200 part-time and seasonal positions at locations in Chicago, Palatine, Northbrook, Franklin Park, Bedford Park and Addison. The company is hiring an additional 600 permanent positions at the company’s regional facility in Hodgkins. Public transportation is available from the south side directly to the Hodgkins facility, and UPS will shuttle employees to the northern suburb locations from its facility at 1400 S. Jefferson Street.

The openings are for a combination of positions, including delivery drivers as well as entry-level package handlers and driver helpers. Many seasonal employees will have the opportunity for advancements into permanent positions following the holiday season.

Chicago’s transportation, distribution and logistics industry accounts for $22 billion in Gross Regional Product and 200,000 jobs. The industry is estimated to add 110,000 jobs over the next decade. Estimates suggest that between a quarter and a third of all freight tonnage in the U.S. originates, terminates or passes through the region. Chicago is the only city in the nation where six of the major North American railroads intersect.

To prepare students for in-demand careers in ground, air, and rail transport, multi-modal distribution and logistics, City Colleges has made Olive-Harvey Colleges its Center of Excellence in Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) education, and has announced construction of a TDL Center at Olive-Harvey College. The 103,000-square-foot facility has been designed with input from City Colleges’ College to Careers faculty and industry partners.

Through College to Careers, launched by Mayor Emanuel and Chancellor Hyman in 2011, City Colleges faculty and staff partner with industry leaders to design curriculum and facilities and offer internships and job opportunities to ensure Chicagoans are ready to hit the ground running in fast-growing fields.
